Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake MixesDear Reader-

Sometimes I am late to the ball game… ya know when everyone else (or at least a lot of people) seem to know something awesomely cool and then you just discover it…

Enter Cake Mix Cookies into my life…

As a daughter of a former cake decorator, I was ALWAYS in awe of the cake mix aisle… all the flavors… all the choices…

I was always shocked that brides would always choose chocolate or white cake over flavors like cherry chip or orange…

Anyhoo…

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake Mixes

Cake Mix Cookies… now, I am no stranger to the concept of using a cake mix in cookie batter… like I told you last year while making these Santa’s Favorite Cake Mix Cookies, Puddie actually made me a batch of Cake Mix Cookies the night he asked me to be his girl 😉

However, I had no idea that there were multiple awesome recipes out there that utilized the versatility of the standard cake mix!

So, today, I thought I’d share the 3 I have recently found…

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake Mixes

NOTE: Cake mixes have reduced in size and it may affect your results. Use this recipe to make your cake mix the right size.

The Santa Cookie recipe from Gooseberry Patch’s Christmas in the Country is very similar to the recipe he used… except he used Butter Pecan cake mix and nixed the white chocolate chips.

Prep Time20 minutes mins
Cook Time12 minutes mins
Servings: 3 dozen (large cookies)
Author: Cris

Ingredients

  • 1 Cake Mix
  • 1 Container Whipped Topping
  • 1 Egg
  • Powdered Sugar

Instructions

  • Mix first 3 ingredients well.
  • Scoop dough by spoonful into powdered sugar and coat
  • Place on a lined cookie sheet
  • Bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes

I think that is why I LOVE Cake Mix Cookies… there are tons of flavor choices at your fingertips…

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake MixesThis year, Miss Add and I found two additional cake mix recipes in Gooseberry Patch’s Christmas Cookie Jar Cookbook and whipped them up in four different flavors!

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake Mixes

First up, we were THRILLED to find Cake Mix Cut-Out Cookies!

(Edited to Add: About half of the readers that use this recipe rave about it… and the other half complain with issues of the dough sticking. Use at your own risk. We love this recipe, but we also use real butter and add flour as needed.)

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake MixesI mean what Christmas is complete without cookie cutters?

And this recipe made whipping them up a snap.

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake MixesWe chose to make Funfetti and Strawberry Cut-Outs.

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake MixesYou start with your cake mix…

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake MixesAdd 1 stick of slightly softened butter (NOT margarine or light butter), 2 eggs and 1 t vanilla

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake MixesNow I scraped my bowl and put the dough in a covered bowl in my fridge for a couple hours for easy rolling and cookie cutting…

*EDITED TO ADD: Some readers are reporting that the dough is getting too sticky for them. I am wondering if humidity could be a factor. Regardless, after testing for more user-friendly instructions, I would recommend that dough spends at least one of those hours in the freezer for best results. Also, cake mixes have reduced in size recently and the smaller mix may affect your results. Use this recipe to make your cake mix the right size.

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake Mixes

I just went ahead and baked my other cookies while I waited.

But let’s pull a fancy cooking show maneuver and pull that already set dough out of the fridge and continue shall we?

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake MixesRoll it out on a floured surface.

*EDITED TO ADD: Cake mixes have reduced in size and it may effect your results. Use this recipe to make your cake mix the right size.

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake MixesGrab that eager 4 yr old and get to cutting out them cookies!

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake MixesFor all those folks who LOVE that “Cake Batter” flavor in their sweets lately… the Funfetti mix gives you that flavor in a cookie and the kids just love it!

Christmas Cookie Recipes Using Cake MixesPlace on lined or greased cookie sheets and decorate with sugars, sprinkles or cinnamon candies…

Then bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes.

Hi!  So, i love this, but i have a question.  I have a couple box cakes here that i’d love to try this with, but both the box mixes also call to add oil and egg.  Do i add the eggs + oil the box calls for PLUS your additional eggs and oil and ingredients?  Or do i only add what you have listed?

Only add the mix to the other ingredients. Do not prepare the cake mix ahead of time. Enjoy!

Does the batter spread like sugar cookie dough? I’ve never had luck with cutout cookies….they always spread so much, even after refrigerating

It spreads a little, but they still retain their shape.

They will spread a little, but not too bad. You can see the photo of the end result to see the amount of spreading

Is it necessary to use store bought whipped topping or can I use the equivalent amount of homemade whipped cream?

I have only tried cool whip. I would assume the homemade whipped cream would break down, but I am not sure…

Tried the cut out cookies without any sucess. Did everything as you stated. The dough was sticky, much more then any dough I have ever used. I could not get it to roll out well at all, no matter how much flour I used. I couldn’t even get the cutouts off my counter and onto the sheet pan without them getting all out of shape. I’m baking them right now, but I doubt I’ll use the rest of the dough that is left. Nice idea, but it didn’t work for me at all.

      Did you refrigerate the dough?

Same thing happened with me. My dough was sticky as well. I feel like there has to be a few steps missing in the process.

Here is a photograph of the original recipe straight from the cookbook. Not sure if humidity might be a factor that is throwing it off for some but not others, but I have checked the recipe and it appears to be the same to me. http://www.goodenessgracious.com/2011/12/3-christmas-cookie-recipes-using-cake-mixes.html/dsc_0767-copy

I am 54 years young and have made cake mix cookies for years. My favorite combinations are chocolate with peanut butter chips, spice with chocolate chips, lemon with sugar sprinkles, white with frosting. I’m told that carrot cake mix tastes like ginger snaps. It’s fun to experiment with all the flavors. I’ve only used 2 eggs and 1/2 cup oil in mine and roll into balls, bake at 350 and they flatten on their own!
