Food Blogger Confessions: I Don’t Know What’s For Dinner Either

It might come as a shock to some (and maybe not others – ha!) that even after 15 years of blogging about recipes, 11 years of which resulted in over 2000 tested recipes in our kitchens, that I too struggle with figuring out what the heck is for dinner each night.

We have even put together countless budget meal plans (that are fantastic by the way) but I am not always a great plan-aheader. (yes… I just made up a word.)

This usually led to a lot of evenings where I had to make yet another decision on what was for dinner after making way to many decisions all day.

This also led to us not always making the best choices out of sheer exhaustion.

We tried a lot of different things until we discovered a system that just works for us.

And it REALLY works for us.

We divided the days of the week up among each of us.

On your day YOU DECIDE what we are having for dinner in this house.

Everyone gets two days a week (mom gets 3).

On one of your days you can choose anything: takeout, freezer meal, make a meal, leftovers, etc.

But YOU decide. No telling mom we are doing takeout and asking her where she wants to go.

If someone doesn’t like it, they are on their own to figure out their meal.

On your other day, you make a meal– again of YOUR CHOICE.

Grocery orders for the next week are due on Thursdays.

This has TRANSFORMED dinner time in this house. I know longer feel like it is all on my shoulders and we don’t get stuck in a rut.

We are trying lots of new recipes (and enjoying lots more of our old favorites).

I totally realize this may not be a solution for anyone but us, but I truth be told it has been a lifesaver around here.
