Creamy Homemade Cole Slaw

Hey y’all! GOODe Ole Boy here!

A while back we were making a recipe for our YouTube channel using cabbage and I mentioned grandma’s creamy homemade cole slaw.  (Wait…you mean you didn’t know we had a YouTube channel???  Head over to YouTube.com/MikeyGoode and subscribe for ALL KINDS of yummy recipes and family fun!!!) Sorry, shameless plug…

Creamy Homemade Cole Slaw

Anyhoo, we had some left over cabbage and I mentioned that you could use it for coleslaw and said that grandma (my momma) had a great and simple recipe for a creamy coleslaw that was a family favorite.  I got comment after comment from the members of our Crock Posse (that’s what our YouTube channel subscribers call themselves 😉 ) to make my momma’s recipe, so here it is!

Now, truth be told, there really is no true measurement by momma’s standards on how to make her coleslaw.  It’s kind of an “eyeball it til you like it” recipe. For the sake of a recipe card though, I’ll do my best.  As far as the ingredients, you can’t get much more simple than this.  It’s all about cabbage, a carrot, some Miracle Whip and some sugar.

Growing up, Miracle Whip was called mayonnaise in our house.  Yes, I know those two products are COMPLETELY different, but think of it how y’all in the south call all sodas “Coke.”  Miracle Whip is technically a “dressing”, and cabbage mixed with carrots is technically a salad, so now you can say you had a salad with your dinner.  A salad…with sugar and Miracle Whip, that is.

Ingredients for Creamy Homemade Cole Slaw

1/2 head cabbage small (about 5 cups when shredded)
1 carrot peeled
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1 cup Miracle Whip (plus more to taste)

How to Make Creamy Homemade Cole Slaw

  1. Shred cabbage and carrot using grater or food processer
  2. Add sugar and Miracle Whip
  3. Mix until sugar is dissolved and slaw is creamy
  4. Add more Miracle Whip and/or sugar to taste for creaminess and sweetness
  5. Refrigerate for 1 hour before serving

Just made this recipe and it is fabulous. I have a good slaw recipe with mayo, but why go to all that work to sweeten it up, etc., when this is so simple to make?! Wowser! Thanks to your mama, Mikey, for sharing it.
