Miss Add isn’t overly creative when she names her dollies, pets and stuffed animals…
Most of the time we end up with a Blackie, Fluffy, Dolly, or something along those lines.
Gilbert only was Gilbert because he reminded her of Caillou’s cat.
Otherwise, if there is something Add loves about the to-be-named, that generally becomes its name.
So the other day when we were in the store and she asked for a $5 stuffed animal and I conceded, I knew we were in for another naming session…
“Oh Mommy, I just love my unicorn!”
“Oh, you do?” I said as we traipsed through the crowded store.
“Yeah, she is so soft and cuddly.”
“Oh, yeah? What do you want to name her?”
Thoughts of cuddles or softy came to mind.
“I don’t know… what should I name her?”
“Well, what is it you love about her?”
Thinking… cuddly and soft…
“Her horn”
At this time I see the wheels turning in her head and I instantly become increasing aware of the large amount of people around us– listening in to the cute little girl with the unicorn.
Quickly, before she has her very own Loretta Lynn/Bologna moment (much to my embarrassment)… I attempt to bring the naming process to a quick and uneventful close.
“Her purse says Princess, so that must be her name.”
“Oh, ok… Princess it is! I just love Princess.”
Whew.
And that is how Princess got her name.

I remember reading a post about a little boy asking about elephant nuts. The parent was quite flustered and didn’t know what to say. After a minute or the dad realized the boy was asking about peanuts, lol!
When my youngest was Addie’s age, EVERYTHING was named Katy. She was her best friend at preschool and immortalized their friendship by naming everybody in the house Katy.
