From Dresses to Coveralls

Yesterday I frantically took Miss Add Easter dress shopping. Somehow between travel, work and chaos, I mentally missed the Easter date on the calendar.

Miss Add Dress

I am horrible with dates… just ask Aunt Lou.

I screw up anniversary dates, birthdays, you name it…

I may or may not have even sent out the wrong wedding date for my own wedding at one point…

So when a holiday like Easter moves around on the calendar, I am totally fighting an uphill battle.

It was among this self-made chaos that one of those precious moments snuck right in.

Miss Add ya see is all about calendar dates. When a holiday is approaching, she makes a BIG deal out of them… counting down for days. (I had been out of town and thus missed the count down 😉 ).

But when listening to the Easter count down, I became a little concerned that my girl was missing the point of Easter as she gushed about Easter eggs and stuffed bunny animals…

I mean clearly she missed the story of Jesus tucked away in her mother’s frantic scrambling to find her a dress and matching shoes for the most important holiday for our faith, right?

Never mind Miss Add missing the point, clearly I had.

My forgetting the date and resulting immediate frenzied response in being overly concerned about grabbing Easter baskets, strappy sandals and egg dye all in one fell swoop says more about my heart’s preparation for this day than my ability to purchase dresses that twirl and fake grass in a timely fashion.

Deep breath.

Me: Miss Add, do you know that Easter isn’t really about all this stuff? Ya know eggs and bunnies and stuff?

Miss Add: What is it about?

Me: Easter is when Jesus arose from the grave and He lives with God in heaven now.

Miss Add: Cause He dies on Good Friday?

Me: (Shew… perhaps I am not a total mom faith-failure) Yes, that is when He died for our sins so we can go to heaven with Him. But on Easter we celebrate when He arose from the dead is alive today with God in heaven.

Miss Add: Jesus and God live together?!? Are they brothers?

Me: No, God is Jesus’ father.

Miss Add: NO WAY!!! You mean that Jesus lives with His Daddy just the way I am going to live with you and Daddy when I grown up?!

Now to understand the special-ness of this moment you will have to know that Miss Add has been concerned for the last 2 years that if she grows up she will have to leave us and not live in Mommy and Daddy’s house. It is a HUGE concern for her. She mentions it almost weekly. We have tried to reassure her that she can live with us as long as she wants to… and she is dead set that she and her husband will be living with Mommy and Daddy long into the future.

So her connection of the Easter story as a comfort to the one concern on her little five year old heart made me take a moment to pause and realize that Jesus’ sacrifice on that cross really does cover all. From her childhood apprehensions to her mother’s forgetfulness and sinfulness, thank God that Jesus covered all.

And that is how we went from Easter dresses to Easter coveralls this year.
